Do You Underbelieve in You? Shifting From Fear to Creator Thinking

Episode published September 25, 2026

What if the biggest thing standing between you and the life you say you want isn’t strategy, money, time, or opportunity? What if it’s that somewhere underneath it all, you don’t fully believe it’s possible for you?

I can have the vision. I can set the goals. I can build the plan. But if I underbelieve in myself, fear, doubt and disbelief will quietly determine what I do next. So that’s my question for you today. Do you underbelieve in you?

If I told you, without a shadow of a doubt, that you could have everything in your big vision, that it would all work out if you just took the steps and trusted your gut, I want to know how that would make you feel. Excited? Nervous? Full of disbelief? That reaction tells you something.

Key Takeaways

The Brain Only Knows What You Feed It

The reticular activating system in your brain only knows the reality you’re feeding it. If you’re thinking small, it will find evidence of small. If you’re focused on the what ifs and the negatives, I promise you the thing that shows up is going to align with those circumstances and prove that you’re right. But we can actually use our brains to our advantage. We can change our focus to change our future.

Fear and Destiny Play on the Same Playground

I’ve known for over twenty five years that fear and your destiny exist in the same place. When I stepped into starting this podcast, the disbelief showed up immediately: who do you think is going to listen, Michelle? That’s the fear trying to keep me safe. But the decision I have to make every time is which voice I’m going to listen to.

Rebuilding an Identity From Scratch

When I left the insurance space, I had no idea who I was outside of what I did. I call that my freedom year, and you’d think the voice of potential would be loudest there. Instead the voice of fear was at its loudest, because there was so much unknown about what was next. I had to sit and dream, journal, and visualize what my ideal life and business would actually look like, work I did even while I was navigating financial hardships and a divorce, and I never stopped believing it was possible.

Borrowing Someone Else’s Belief in You

A neighbor I met at a networking event, someone in reverse mortgages, asked me for coffee because he’d heard I wrote Prosperity After Divorce. That coffee led to him sharing my book with his boss, and within an hour I had an invitation to fly to Washington, D.C. days later to sit in a room with people like the head of AARP and the head of Brown University. On that flight, imposter syndrome hit hard. What got me out of it was remembering that someone else’s belief in my vision had gotten me on that plane in the first place, and I could borrow that until my own belief caught up.

Aligned Action Interrupts the Cycle

I’m still nervous. I go to hit record and I’m still nervous. But I don’t let myself sit in disbelief or fear or worry. I simply take action, because aligned action is the enemy of thought.

Fear and your destiny play on the same playground. The decision you have to make is which one you’re going to listen to.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I underbelieve in myself?

I ask myself: if I was guaranteed with 100% certainty that my big vision would work out if I just took the steps, how would I feel? If the answer is nervousness, fear, or disbelief instead of excitement and possibility, that tells me I’ve got work to do on my belief in myself.

What do I do when my brain keeps telling me why something won’t work?

I’ve learned to notice that voice and then ask myself better questions instead, like what opportunities am I not seeing, or how can I make the biggest impact in the least amount of time. I don’t have to have all the answers, I just have to believe I don’t know how yet but it’s going to happen.

What can I do when I feel like an imposter in a room of people who seem more qualified than me?

I’ve been in that exact spot, flying into a room with people far more credentialed than me, and my brain went straight to who am I to be here. What got me through it was remembering that someone else already believed in my vision enough to hand me that seat, and I let myself borrow that belief until my own caught up.

How did you rebuild your sense of identity after leaving your old business?

I called that stretch my freedom year, and even though it should have felt full of potential, fear was actually at its loudest because so much was unknown. I worked through it with visualization and journaling, really dreaming about what my ideal workday and business could look like, and I kept going even through financial hardships and a divorce.
